Audi's first-ever all-electric car will debut soon--in mid-September in San Francisco--and there's more to look forward to than just a new Audi model.

Though, is it ever "just" a new Audi?

The all-new Audi e-tron will mark a significant step toward the future of vehicles, one that's a lot more electric than the current field of gas- and diesel-powered cars and SUVs. Audi is by no means the first automaker to throw their hat in the ring for electric luxury vehicle options, but it may be the best we've seen yet in all-around functionality, comfort, and performance.

What is the Audi e-tron?

It will likely look familiar--but it's like nothing we've ever seen here in Charlotte.

It's a fully electric, all-wheel-drive premium luxury crossover, that may be close in size to the current Audi Q5, but may actually provide interior space and versatility closer to the existing Audi Q7.

However, unlike either of those SUVs, this currently camo'd crossover won't ever need to take a single sip of gasoline.

The new e-tron will use a 95-kwh lithium-ion battery and two electric motors, and horsepower for this system will range between about 355 horsepower and 402 horsepower. A state-of-the-art braking system for the vehicle uses both electric regeneration and conventional hydraulic assist.

The recuperation capabilities of the braking system capture a huge amount of power that would usually just be lost, to re-charge the battery during long downhill slopes and just during any normal braking. This intelligent system plays a big part in the Audi e-tron's expected total driving mileage.
